Why Leadership Development is Critical for Growing Your Design Firm
It’s common for a design firm to plateau, not from a lack of talent, but from a deficiency in leadership. It can be difficult to shift your focus from daily design work to becoming a visionary CEO. Our latest article explores how you can develop your leadership skills, empowering you to steer the ship and transform your business.
It’s time to stop second-guessing yourself when talking about money. It’s time to own your pricing—and sell without “selling.”
If you’ve ever thought…
- “I’m a designer, not a salesperson! I can’t sell!”
- “I want to improve my closing rate but I don’t want to seem pushy.”
- “I know my work is worth the price, but I can’t effectively communicate that value.”
- “Selling makes me feel dirty or like I’m trying to take advantage of my clients.”
- “I want to use tactics like markups and upselling, but I don’t want to push my clients away.”
…then get ready to learn:
- What affluent clients actually need to hear from you before saying yes.
- The Y-E-S Framework: a simple way to guide clients to clarity (and commitment).
- How to talk about pricing without feeling awkward or apologetic.
- Why objections aren’t the end—they’re just the beginning of trust.
- A roadmap to build confidence in every step of your sales process.
Designer Mel Bean Transforms a Tulsa Landmark
Pearl Collective is proud to spotlight the work of Mel Bean, a Tulsa designer who has dedicated nearly two decades to building an expansive portfolio of colorful, curated interiors. As the founder of Mel Bean Interiors, she has gained national recognition for projects like The Pioneer Woman Lodge and earned features in publications such as Forbes and House & Home.
In 2018, Bean applied her signature touch to a personal project: her own 110-year-old Craftsman in the historic Riverview neighborhood. “It was a perfect opportunity for me to put my own imprint on it,” she says of the home, which had retained its character but hadn’t been updated since the 1980s.
Bean’s goal was to create spaces that felt both “elegant and approachable,” blending modern updates with the home’s original charm. See the full transformation in the September online issue of TulsaPeople Home. We love seeing Mel’s continued success!

Mel’s beloved Cuban canvas is the focus of this snug, simple and inviting entry to her home. The bold violet sofa adds variance and depth to the room.
Mel Bean’s favorite place in her home, is the library. Originally a bedroom, this space was converted into a library and personal home office by adding built-in shelving and cabinetry.
